The goals of the health teacher workshops are to increase knowledge and understanding of healthy vs.unhealthy relationships, increase knowledge of teen dating violence curriculum materials, increase understanding of how to respond to teen victims, and increase knowledge of the availability of community resources. Implementing the Lindsay Ann Burke Act is also covered. Participants learn the dynamics of teen dating violence, discuss various curriculum and educational activities, hear from members of community agencies, see a teen dating violence skit performed by students, and their Rhode Island schools receive free curriculum materials to be used in their classrooms. Safe Dates, recognized by the US Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration as a model program, is the major and most expensive piece of curriculum given to the schools. In addition, Rhode Island participants receive other curriculum materials, including the “Love is not Abuse” curiculum, and lesson plans on teen dating violence. Both Safe Dates and Love is not Abuse are approved by the RI Dept of Education. All curriculum books and DVD’s are donated by LABMF to the participant’s Rhode Island school. A complimentary breakfast and lunch are provided.

Topics covered in each workshop include:

  • Types of violence
